General Classroom Information for 7th Grade Life Science

  1. You are required to have all classroom supplies with you each day (this is part of your homework assignment each night):  textbook, Middle School Life Science, pencil, red ink pen, planner (for assignments and grade recording), and a special notebook from the bookstore, (I will explain this at the start of the first class).
  2. All students are expected to be attentive in class, to take part in class discussions, and to be on their best behavior (these three items will be the final factor in determining grades).
  3. The base grade will be determined by the following scale:  major grades = 75% and minor grades = 25%.
  4. All work will be done in pencil unless otherwise instructed.
  5. When answering questions (from book, whiteboard, etc.), all questions should be copied word for word.
  6. All work is expected to be done as neatly as possible.  Use the eraser:  Do not mark out, write over a word or letter, or use whiteout.
  7. When used, all notebook pages in the notebook should have explanatory headings.
  8. Homework is a requirement; for every homework assignment not completed, a point will be deducted from the overall average.  Homework not completed may be turned in the next day for partial credit. You may also be requirted to attend homework hall.
  9. My classroom website is www.hallscience7.com. Please check it on a regular basis. It will contain classroom information, announcements, test dates. etc. I will not post daily homework assignments. Check the student planner for that information.
  10. Please use the "paper recycling box" to dispose of all paper during class.

Lab and Dissection Guidelines

  1. I will wear goggles and a lab apron whenever using chemicals, glassware, or heat.
  2. I will do lab work/dissections only when the teacher is present.
  3. I will never use flammable liquids near a source of flame or spark.
  4. I will never smell or taste chemicals. When testing for odors, I will use a wafting motion to direct the odor to my nose.
  5. I will avoid touching chemicals. If chemicals come in contact with my skin, I will rinse that area immediately in the sink and notify the teacher.
  6. If containers have labels, I will read them carefully before opening and using the contents.
  7. I will perform only the lab activities assigned by the teacher and use only lab equipment indicated by the teacher.
  8. I will not abuse lab equipment or use it in inapropriate ways.
  9. I will keep my lab area and classroom clean. When the lab/dissection is completed, I will follow my teacher's instructions for cleaning my work area.
  10. I will not wear loose or bulky clothing when doing a lab/dissection, and I will tie back long hair, especially when working with a flame.
  11. I will not eat, drink, or chew gum during a lab or dissection.
  12. When heating or doing reactions in test tubes, I will point the test tubes away from myself and others.
  13. I will not engage in any horseplay and will give my complete attention to the lab/dissection.
  14. I will be especially careful when using pointed and/or sharp instruments when doing my dissections.
  15. I will report any accidents to the teacher immediately.
